Call to Silence

I was working on a business problem before I went to bed last night. I dreamed about the business scenario all night and woke up early feeling urgent to figure it out.

After I got out of bed to get ready for my early morning hike, I heard a red tail hawk screeching. I stopped what I was doing to listen, ... but couldn't make out the message.

I readied myself for the hike. As I was leaving my property, I saw and heard three red tail hawks squawking and screeching with one another on the rocky cliffs. Again, I stopped and listened for the message …

I felt thick headed, fuzzy and couldn't discern a clear message, so I proceeded on my morning hike. During my hikes I generally pray the Medicine Wheel for guidance. This morning was no exception. I asked for help on the business problem I was attempting to solve.

During my prayer, I heard yet another red tail hawk screeching high above me. On the cliff a red tail hawk was perched, watching attentively over the valley below. Certainly at this point, I must be able to hear the message!

I stopped and asked the hawk to screech when I touched upon the message. In my mind, I thought a first thought, –no speech. I thought a second thought, – no screech. I thought a third thought,-- no screech. Then my mind went blank and began to wander…

“Screech,” exclaimed the hawk.

I was woken out of my reverie. What? What was I thinking about at that moment?

Again, I ran through the process: first thought, no screech; second thought; no screech; third thought, no screech; silence.

“Screech”

This time I caught it: “ Silence. I am to gather that silence today.  I need to put down the problem and the active mental wrestling match and cultivate some inner silence and a solution will come at the right time.

How do you feel about this course of action? I struggle with this. I like to push hard until I can figure something out, wrestle with it, control it, bend it to my will. Haha. But that isn't the way today. The message is clearly to let go of the problem or suspend it, put it on a shelf for now and cultivate the silence.

Allowing myself to be in silence means I need to surrender and have faith. Sitting in silence means letting it go, even temporarily, and allowing for something from the unknown to come in.

I went home and procrastinated for a while. I played in the garden and looked for tasks to do before getting into silence. Then I decided it was time for my daily Transcendental Meditation. Transcendental Meditation is one effective practice for connecting with that inner silence. The silence of Transcendental Meditation is very refreshing.

After my meditation, I felt at peace. I don't yet have the answer to my business problem. Yet, I feel at peace and feel comforted in knowing that the answer will come at the right time.
