The DC Effect: How Energy Healing Reclaims Our Vitality

Trauma healers often have traumatic backgrounds. They have worked on healing from their trauma and have tremendous empathy, compassion, and wisdom from experience.

I am one of those healers. I lost my dad when I was 10 years old to brain cancer and was not allowed to grieve. This childhood emotional trauma profoundly affected me and the course of my life.

Early in my career, I was drawn to work in mental health and ended up working with children with severe physical and sexual abuse backgrounds. Unfortunately, at the time 30 years ago, these teens did not have many options for healing from trauma. Rather they had to learn to cope with their trauma and mental illness throughout their lives.

I could not accept the notion that trauma healing wasn't an option.  I went back to graduate school and studied psychology and looked into the history of our understanding of the connection between the body and mind.  I also concurrently began to study energy healing at the Healing Light Center Church.

It turns out that my teacher, Rev. Rosalyn Bruyere did a research study at UCLA focused on the body and the human energy field.  Her team measured an energy phenomenon called the DC shift or DC field effect, which is the energy shift that happens when a person receives a trauma and also happens when a trauma is released.

he DC field (Direct Current) effect is a key element in understanding how trauma is stored and released within the body’s energy field. When we experience trauma, whether emotional or physical, it disrupts the natural flow of energy in our bodies. The DC field effect is this measurable shift in the body’s electromagnetic field that occurs at the moment of trauma and again when the trauma is released during the healing process. These shifts were observed through various scientific instruments, showing that trauma leaves a distinct energetic imprint.

In Rev. Bruyere’s research, the study focused on how this shift could be measured and visualized during healing sessions, like deep bodywork or energy healing. For instance, in Rolfing sessions, as the body underwent deep tissue manipulation, the first chakra (which governs our survival instincts and connection to the physical world) would often show a red frequency, a color deeply connected to survival energy. When trauma was released, this red energy would move or shift to other chakras, reflecting a flow of energy toward healing and emotional release. This shift might show up as orange or violet, colors associated with the emotional and spiritual realms, signifying the movement of stored pain from the body toward emotional processing and ultimately, spiritual integration.

This isn’t just theoretical, science shows that trauma has a real, measurable impact on our energy fields. Rev. Bruyere’s research was one of the first to correlate the energy shifts in the body (as seen in the chakras) with scientific data, such as changes in the body’s electrical field recorded through instruments. These shifts are tangible and play a critical role in understanding how energy healing works, particularly when it comes to trauma.

For trauma healers, this understanding of the DC field effect is vital. Trauma isn't only stored in our minds or bodies, it lives within our energy fields. And it is only through working with this energy, releasing these blockages, that true healing can occur. The DC shift is a reflection of this process: a literal transformation of energy within the body as we heal, release, and re-align ourselves.

For me, this research validated a truth that I had long felt:

Healing is possible, not only because we have the capacity to shift our energy but because our bodies and souls are designed to move towards wholeness. Healing is not just about coping with the past, it’s about reclaiming our energy, our vitality, our life force. The science of the chakras, as explored through Wheels of Light, offers a powerful framework for understanding this journey, a journey of returning to ourselves, to the vibrant, energetic beings we truly are.

If you're interested in energy healing or considering it as a career path, the Trauma Healing Team Workshop is an excellent starting point. You'll gain practical skills, learn how trauma impacts the body, and discover the strength of working within a healing team. This workshop provides insight into a future of supporting others, one healing touch at a time.
